Introducing the work of @paulette_bansalprints This is part of the current #group #exhibition ‘On Closer Inspection’ of #originalprints by @revealprintmakers

12.00pm – 4.30pm with the last entry at 4pm. On Paulette’s initial visit to the Haworth Art Gallery, she was immediately drawn to the architectural
features of the building’s original heating system. The engraved metal plates embedded in
the first-floor floorboards, along with the ground-floor metal grilles and exposed pipes,
became the starting point for this body of work.
Subsequent visits deepened her investigation. Paulette began by exploring archival plans held in
the Howarth’s onsite archive boxes. Her research expanded to the Lancashire Record Office,
where she investigated the heating system installed by G.N. Haddon. Unfortunately, no
detailed plans have survived—many were lost due to council policies that regularly “weed
out” building records to manage storage capacity for future submissions.
Paulette’s process evolved through a combination of collage, photography, and frottage, all
carried out on-site. The rich industrial history of the region, particularly the nearby mills that used the patented
Turkey Red dyeing process informed the colour palette of the final works. Collage and
layering on the smaller works is to suggest the layers of history at the Haworth. I chose the
intaglio ‘collagraph’ print process to naturally allow texture to soften line and small etching

12.00pm – 4.30pm with the last entry at 4pm. On visiting the Haworth Art Gallery and Museum, the former Hollins Hill House, Bridget
immediately became interested in the role of the cotton trade that lay at the heart of
the wealth of this family and the local textile industry.
The hand painted glass windows in the house contain images referring to the
industry and it was the sailing ship that became the inspiration for the screen
prints. While other print processes might more directly address the darkness of the
slave trade, it was the light and colours of the mosaics that led to her working in
screenprint.
Bridget’s approach to this work was through drawing, taking photos of the walk down to
the old mill site, and making collages. Also reading. Capitalism and Slavery* (1944)
describes the rise and fall of the Atlantic slave trade (cotton, sugar and tobacco)
through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and how it laid the foundations of
the Industrial Revolution. She could not help but be struck by the similarity between the
high tariffs (and subsequent repeal) employed by Britain in the 1700 – 1800s as the
dominant world power, and the current tariffs being imposed by the US today.
Bridget represents an idea but the figure or object is often a metaphor that relates to an
underlying narrative, and it is the emotion from, or engagement with this narrative…

12.00pm – 4.30pm with the last entry at 4pm. Yvonne was drawn to the Tiffany collection, especially the beauty and form of the vessels.
Researching the Hollins Hill house and the Arts & Crafts Movement
She centred on their belief in the importance of nature as inspiration –
a subject which is at the heart of her practice.
Yvonne gathered cuttings from the gallery garden to press so that
they could become an integral part of the printing plates. Whilst
also studying the mosaics and specifically how a whole is made up
of separate parts… the result greater than the individual pieces.
Sadly during this time of research and responding to such beautiful
objects there was an ugliness that presented itself. The backdrop
of the research included the atrocities in Southport (July 2024)
that demanded attention. The mosaic then began to represent
fragamentation, reflecting a breakdown of society – the destruction
of beauty. From that came the response, that of the community
coming together and creating something again greater than
the individual. The vase became symbolic of this, and the hope
that beauty and good can survive.
Yvonne drew upon on Kintsugi – the Japanese art of repair – whereby the
broken pieces are carefully bonded together using laquer mixed
with powdered precious metals. Not only is the visible repair a
showcase of the vase’s history, it is often seen as a metaphor for

gardens and the local countryside. She visited shortly after a snowfall and was struck by the
profound sense of peace.
I aimed to evoke a mood of quiet contemplation, depicting the distinctive house from various
vantage points.
Certain features of the house and gardens also caught my attention, and in her smaller
etchings she has ‘zoomed in’ on these elements — isolating and enlarging them to the point

12.00pm – 4.30pm with the last entry at 4pm. Alison’s work reflects on both the interests of the Haworth siblings and how the house is used today. They believed in education for workers, Women’s rights
and a more egalitarian society. In the early 1900s this house was
presumably a place for convivial conversation, earnest political
discussion, action plans and fine dining.
it is now open to the public with weddings and parties,
coach trips to look at the collection of glassware, school trips to
find out about its history, visitors who enjoy happy chats over lunch,
artist’s studios, activities for families and exhibitions, possibly reflects
their generally broad minded philosophy and appreciation of the
importance of art and learning for everyone.
Alison doubts that the Haworths’ egalitarian vision was exactly
one where people roam through their living rooms, chatter and
laugh and joke loudly in the bar and restaurant; where school
children and families make butterflies and hats out of coloured
paper and artists put their work on the walls. Nevertheless it is
a wonderful legacy and fits well with their values – every day the

12.00pm – 4.30pm with the last entry at 4pm. Whilst researching for this project the Tiffany Glass collection reminded Jayne of an exhibition she had seen by the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi
whose still life paintings and etching’s show collections of vases and ceramics. This inspiration led to photographing the glass collection from many
different angles and these developed into drawings to find the composition and arrangements of the vases that she
most liked. As the vases are beautiful objects to admire, Jayne thought the work should concentrate on the tonal values and form of the vases. As a Printmaker she
felt the technique of etching lent itself to this the most. #groupexhibition #etching #femaleartists #drawing #contemporaryprintmaking
